Spoofed Calls, Texts & Verification Code Scams

We have received numerous reports of fraudulent calls and text messages in which criminals pretend to be representatives of Maps. These fraudsters are using sophisticated tactics to deceive and manipulate unsuspecting members and then drain their accounts. It is crucial to be aware of these scams and take necessary precautions to protect yourself.

These criminals may:

  • Direct you to fake websites designed to steal your information
  • Claim there is suspicious activity on your account
  • Ask for verification/security codes texted to your phone
  • Request online banking credentials or card information

How the Scam Works

Fraudsters will call or text you, often using “spoofed” phone numbers to make it appear as though the call or text is coming from Maps. They may use official-sounding language and claim to be from the Maps customer service team or fraud department. During the call or in the text messages, they might claim there is a problem with your Maps account, such as suspicious activity or the need to update your information. The scammers will then ask for sensitive information, such as a security code you received via text, your online banking login details, or debit or credit card numbers (even just partial numbers can compromise your account). They may also direct you to a fake website that looks like the official Maps site.

Remember, Maps employees will NEVER:

  • Ask for your online banking password
  • Ask for texted verification or security codes
  • Ask for your full debit or credit card number
  • Ask you to move money to another account for “protection”
  • Request remote access to your device

If someone claiming to be from Maps asks for this information, stop communication immediately and contact us directly at 503-588-0181.

To Protect Yourself:

  • Verify the Caller: If you receive a call or text claiming to be from Maps, do not provide any personal information. Hang up and contact Maps customer service directly using the official contact information on our website or call us at 503.588.0181.
  • Be Skeptical: Be cautious of unsolicited calls and texts, especially if the caller asks for card or account information. Maps will never ask for your password, payment information, or texted security codes over the phone.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect that you have received a fraudulent call or text, report it to Maps immediately.  You can also report scammers to the FBI at ic3.gov.

Remember, the key to protecting yourself from these scams is to stay informed and vigilant. Always verify the identity of the caller and never share your personal information over the phone.
